The Great Depression caused the realization of many needs, among which was the need for competent property management. Prior to that time, property management was considered a sideline to real estate brokerage by many firms and even owners. But as more and more buildings became financially troubled or came under the ownership of banks and insurance companies which had formerly held mortgages on them, business as well as the public investor realized a need for recognizable, competent property management.
In 1934, a group of realtors dedicated to fulfilling this need formed the Institute of Real Estate Management and created the designation of Certified Property Manager (CPM®), a designation earned only after competence and experience were proven. Later, a designation for firms, Accredited Management Organization®, was created. Today, IREM is recognized throughout the United States and Canada as a professional organization devoted to the development and recognition of professional property managers. Its more than 9,000 Certified Property Managers are men and women of outstanding experience and knowledge. IREM serves the investing public through certifying only those realtors who have proven their ability to manage. It serves the real estate profession with information, educational materials and publications designed to increase and promote professional property management.
